How Can I Help My Child When Their Two-Year Molars Erupt?

Your two-year-old’s molars can be incredibly uncomfortable for your child, and if you’re starting to notice your child become more irritable or moody, then it’s most likely their molars! As the first set of molars to come in, it can be tough to help them during this time, but don’t worry! Our team at Smiling Kids is here to help, and we’re here to provide a general outline of what to look for from your child and how to help alleviate their discomfort.

Symptoms and Remedies For Helping Your Child With Their Two-Year-Old Molars Erupting

As a parent, you’re most likely aware of the fact that you’re child’s teeth are coming in, and if their two-year-old molars are coming in, then they’re right on time for a full set of teeth! These molars are the first set to allow them to grind food into smaller pieces and help them enjoy all the tasty food they want (although they may not think so initially). However, these teeth tend to be more stubborn when erupting, as they arrive underdeveloped and occur as buds below the gumline. Some key symptoms and signs to look out for when their molars are erupting include:

  • Drooling: When your child’s molars start coming in, then your child may drool more than usual.
  • Chewing: You may also find that they’re chewing on toys, clothes, and even their own fingers from time to time.
  • Gum Redness: If you take a look at their gums, then you may see their first molars come in with some redness surrounding their gums.
  • Terrible Night’s Sleep: They may have more of a difficult time sleeping than normal.
  • Low-Grade Temperature: They may also experience a low-grade temperature of 99 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Irritability: Most of all, they may not be so happy about their new teeth coming in and may be more irritable as a result.

While all of these symptoms may be worrisome, this is considered a normal part of growing up! You can do plenty for your child as they get their first molars. Some tips we can offer include:

  • Fun Distractions: Giving them fun distractions to do, including playing musical instruments, playing board games, watching TV, and drawing, to help them through this time.
  • Teething Rings: Teething rings can be a great way to help your child through their first molars, as they can help alleviate any signs of discomfort.
  • Rubbing Their Gums: You can also rub their gums with a clean finger to help soothe pain and irritation from time to time.
  • Cold, Wet Washcloths: Washing their gums with a wet, cold washcloth can help reduce inflammation and give them some temporary relief.
  • Moisturize Their Mouth: If they drool excessively, then moisturize their mouth with baby lotion or chapstick can help relieve dry lips.
